Washington Center for Image Dentistry of Bethesda helped pioneer the revolutionary procedure-working with researchers around the world. It's made possible in part because of an exclusive ICAT machine that takes 3-D X-rays of patients' mouths. The detailed pictures allow Drs. Abraham Ingber, Vincent Prestipino and Thanos Kristallis to plan the surgery with pinpoint accuracy-basically perform a virtual surgery-that eliminates potential problems ahead of time. The doctors map out the precise placement in the gums of small titanium posts, or implants-that are used to permanently hold the replacement teeth. "The ICAT 3-D X-rays are like using GPS as opposed to stopping and asking for directions," says Dr. Abraham Ingber.

The surgery is also unique because we insert the implants precisely through the gums to anchor it in the bone-while most other dentists need to cut open the gums.
